Concrete Planters for the Garden, Patio or Terrace

Also: Concrete Planters, Outdoor Planters

The traditional material for garden statues and ornaments was stone, carved by a craftsman. However, with the arrival of concrete and then concrete aggregates, these more modern materials have found their way into garden decor through the use of concrete moulds. Concrete planters are now amongst the most common types of planters you can buy.

The use of concrete moulds for planters has been accompanied by advances in creating different finishes to concrete aggregates. What that means is there is probably more choice of concrete garden planters than ever before. These artificial containers can be made to appear in many types of authentic looking styles that can marry a vintage, antique appeal with modern methods and materials.

Concrete garden planter - rolled rim traditional styleOne of the most effective alternatives to concrete is fiberstone, which is a mix of stones, sand and fine fibre mesh. The traditional terracota looking flower pot shown left is actually made from fiberstone, and as you can see is very convincing. Fiberstone is also lighter weight than concrete or stone, yet not so liable to damage in the garden.

This has real classical styling and design, yet is using the most modern of techniques for pots and containers. It can be finished in 9 different ways, from a whitish shade through light and dark browns to green, all designed to make the planter look like an antique of the highest quality.

Back to the terracota look again with the final container, the Spanish Planter. This warm and traditional planter looks at home in many parts of the garden, but you do need to be careful with the type of paving you combine it with. The colour does not match nicely with every coloured paving slab you can buy.
