- Deck planters: Deck planters are versatile in that they often serve more than one purpose with many acting as benches as well as housing plants and flowers. Usually made from natural wood or polyresin blends, deck planters can be found in the typical square or rectangular shape, as well as circular, or oval designs and can also be used to plant vegetable gardens on decks and patios.

- Garden urns: Urns are available in many types of materials and can serve as the perfect focal point for all gardens. This type of planter is made of many natural and man-made materials, as well as in a number of varying heights and detailed styles. Place a pair of urns at the entrance of any garden, pathway, at the front entrance of the home, or on a patio for a completely transformed look.

- Hanging and wall planters: For outdoor areas with little square footage, hanging planters are space efficient and offer the perfect solution for adding more color and foliage regardless of the size of your garden. Wall planters are great for flowers and plants that cascade downward and can be attached to columns, fences, large posts, or, put several along a single wall for a dramatic statement.

- Self watering planters: Self watering planters, contrary to their name, will still require that plants and flowers be watered, but just not as often as if they were growing in another type of container. The design of these containers will vary, but the general premise is the same; to keep soil at the right moisture level at all times. Some self watering planters will feature a column in the center that draws water from the reservoir at the bottom of the planter when needed, while others will have a large wick that serves the very same purpose.

With an endless array of so many different choices, where do you begin when trying to choose the absolute perfect garden planter for your outdoor living space?

Placement is one of the very first things to consider, and with garden planters, you basically have free reign as they can be put in just about any outdoor area. Personal taste and creativity also come into play as you can choose several planters of either similar styles and designs, or a few in contrasting colors and varying sizes for a more noticeable impact.

While planters are often the focal point of gardens and backyards, an extra large planter in too small of a space will be overpowering, while those that are too small in a bigger area will get lost in the expanse.
